It is 1988. Simon Foreman has spent the last two years working on cases for SCP Lyon-Caen Fabiani-Liard, lawyers before France’s supreme court, whilst at the same time teaching university seminars. He is on the verge of embarking on a career as an international civil servant at the European Court of Human Rights, when some friends pass two books on to him. In the first book, "Her Lover" by Albert Cohen, he discovers a day in the life of an international civil servant at the League of Nations - somewhat discouraging... The second book, on the other hand, immerses him in the humanity and fascinating paradoxes of the work of a lawyer. It would be an understatement to say that the first question on the back cover piqued his interest: "Sir, how can you possibly defend a bankrupt managing director, an unfaithful husband, a person guilty of fraud, a terrorist, a murderer, or a crime lord?"...
This striking book is "L’Avocature" written by Daniel Soulez Larivière, published in 1982. Simon Foreman is then introduced to its author, who decides to take him on as a trainee in May 1988.
Simon Foreman has therefore been with the firm for more than twenty years. He became Daniel Soulez Larivière’s partner in 1993, five years before Chantal Bonnard and Mauricia Courrégé became the other two partners in the firm.
Simon Foreman and Daniel Soulez Larivière first worked together in 1988, when they prepared a conference on the bicentenary of the French Declaration of the Rights of Man. They continued to work together on a wide range of subjects, reflecting the variety of work that is today handled by the firm. For Simon Foreman, this ranged from the financing of French political parties, a subject that was very popular at the end of the 1980s, to all kinds of national and international cases.
